Funnily enough, I just posted it once I saw it reported on a news site!
I don’t know how I feel just yet—it’s a bit too stylistic for me to get an impression, as we don’t get any dialogue and it’s cut very fast.
It seems like it’ll be a bit more high-tech than the Swedish films—the glimpse of the parade photographs scene comes to mind. I don’t know if I like that we’re shown the parade in color, as if we were there. I much prefer the approach the originals took, with the ghostly, washed-out black-and-white, shuddering movements of the photo sequence.
It seems like either there’s going to be more action, or that they’re going to play up what action there is, and I don’t know if that’s the right approach. When I first showed the films to a friend of mine who hadn’t seen them but had read the books, I told her that I liked that they never made the movies into action films. It’s the type of movie that plays epic music over journalism sequences, the type of movie where Internet searches and sifting through receipts is how the villain is found. We have the one car chase and Blomkvist being shot at, and that’s about it. I don’t think I’ll like it if the remake chooses to punch up those scenes into something more than they were.
As ever, I will try to be optimistic, since I love the cast we have and I’m curious to see if Rooney Mara can do the role of Lisbeth, even if I think there’s no way the original films can be topped (especially since the ending has allegedly been changed, which I think means Harriet’s fate will be different). We’ll see in December, I suppose!
